The Front Salon - Anthony Basheer

“In the Lebanese Druze community, in which I grew up, every home had a good room — the front salon. This always spotless room was a place of public presentation where furnishings were carefully curated to create an impression of prosperity and elegance. This was the room where the adults received their guests and engaged in ‘pleasant’ conversation.

This particular room belonged to a well-respected community member and remained in pristine condition, unchanged for 50 odd years. Although it was in Australia, it was not unlike the salons in Lebanon, that mark the era when the house was built, or the room refurnished. This late 1960’s/early 1970’s decor is typical of the decor by many post-war migrant families – Lebanese, Italian, Greek — with highly lacquered furniture, rich velvet drapes and a contrasting (lurid) Axminister carpet. “
