”I have always been interested in the built environment and natural landscape, so photographing architecture and landscape architecture was a logical career choice. Tailoring my craft for something I was passionate about has served me well. I have always had an innate compositional ability that I explored personally through travel and this drove me to study photography. It’s been an incredible privilege to work with Australia’s talented community of architects and designers, they have been, and still are, my continual education on all things architecture and design based.”

  • The Photographers: Patience, perseverance and concept with Mark Syke

I became a professional photographer much later than most and after a career in the urban development space. I have no formal education as an architect or photographer, though I have for as long as I can remember had a strong interest in both. I did not choose architecture as a profession for whatever reason when such life decisions need to be made – despite being in a somewhat average rock band with two architecture students at the time!

I am instead doing a George Costanza: ‘You know I always wanted to pretend I was an architect!’ To photograph architecture and ‘hang around’ with architects was the next best thing for me.

  • Behind the lens with Anne Stroud

“It was a photograph of the Barcelona Pavilion that I found in my high school library that really drew me to architecture and design.” Sydney and Canberra-based architecture photographer Anne Stroud shares her journey into the profession, as well as the ins and outs on shoot, the gear she never does without and the inspirations that have stuck.

Integral to architecture and design is capturing the finished project through the lens and the expert eye of the photographer. In a new series, The Photographers, we present those whose professional life involves photographing all manner of commercial and residential architecture and design.

  • Image Makers fighting for photographers’ rights

The Image Makers Association Australia is continuing its multi-pronged advocacy strategy by representing photographers at a recent Copyright Roundtable, as well as drafting a submission for an upcoming Government consultation on AI.

The Roundtable’s purpose is to continue discussion on three copyright policy reform issues: quotation of copyrighted material; usage of copyrighted content in remote learning; and most pertinent to photographers, Orphan Works.

The IMAA might just be the voice that the Australian pro photo industry desperately needs, with the new professional photography association achieving all the milestones it set out in its initial roadmap.

  • Image Makers hosts copyright talk

IMAA is a new national photo association for commercial photographers with a strong focus of advocacy and education. The event, running online from 730pm, is free for IMAA members, and is $27 for non-members.

As well as running a successful business, Chris served as an Australian Copyright Council director for eight years, and has continuously gone into bat for professional photographers when there are reviews of copyright law. His copyright advocacy efforts through the ACMP and AIPP were crucial for photographers, and without his input the industry’s voice may not be heard.

  • Image Makers Association all about business

For several years prior to forming the IMAA, a number of Australian architectural photographers were in regular talks with each other about copyright issues. In some instances, they worked to pressure various architect/design awards and publications to change their dubious rights-grabbing terms and conditions.

After the AIPP’s demise left the photo industry without a representative body, and with copyright conditions noticeably worsening, the group saw an opportunity to formalise their lobbying efforts.

  • ARCHITECTS AND IMAGE MAKERS DEVELOP NEW PHOTOGRAPHY PARTNERSHIP

The Australian Institute of Architects and Image Makers Association Australia are pleased to announce a new partnership to enhance our national built environment.

The three-year partnership will formalise collaboration, training and education programs between the two peak bodies, and encourage Image Makers Association members as the preferred photographers for Institute members.

The Australian Institute of Architects, as the nation’s peak body for architects, is committed to demonstrating the value of architecture to the public and improving the quality and sustainability of the built environment.
