21_21 Design Sight - JADE CANTWELL

An ode to all the things that can go wrong (or right!) on a shoot. Turning up to site to see orange bollards, temporary fencing, scissor lifts, maintenance works, or surprise council street works always presents a challenge, not to mention the hope that the weather forecast was correct.

On this occasion my trip around Japan was punctuated by a list of buildings I wanted to visit including 21_21 Design Sight by Tadao Ando. I’d checked the opening hours, orientation for sun and squeezed it in to the trip itinerary, only to find that the building was closed for the next few weeks for long overdue maintenance. ‘Compromised’ by witches hats, tarps and brooms, this is infinitely better than anything I might have photographed there anyway.
