A Refuge - KATHERINE LU

Captured on Eora Nation

My parents came to Australia in the 70s seeking asylum from the war in Vietnam. With very few possessions and limited English they had to find whatever job they could to survive in an unfamiliar country - the restaurants in Chinatown were an obvious choice. Working multiple jobs to send money back home, they didn’t have a lot of time to spend with me. When they did have time to rest and read the Sing Tao newspaper, they would do so in Haymarket Library while I had my own little corner immersed in Tin Tin’s world.

This image is part of a series that attempts the impossible by recreating what is left of my very vague memories of that time and place.
