Silverback - Tim Griffith

Tim Griffith is a freelance architectural photographer with 40 years of experience working on commissions for leading design firms around the world.

While photographing the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, part of the commission involved documenting the complete renovation of the 70 year old Africa Hall Exhibit. The original exhibit specimens had been stored offsite, undergone extensive taxidermy rejuvenation and were now being returned to their new homes in the freshly-painted dioramas.

A palpable sense of stillness in these manufactured scenes brought with it a moment pause to reflect. While these magnificent animals were back home after years away, they weren't. Not really.
