Concrete Sunrise - RHIANNON SLATTER

Captured on Boonwurrung Country

I create compositions that reference the demands of human evolution and subsequent implications of ever-changing growth in developing urban landscapes. Using photography to explore the beauty and geometry of the built environment, I create work that evokes the aesthetics of the industry, infrastructure, and transport settings that inspire me. My images are built by layering photographs using digital post-production techniques, the final compositions being carefully combined to achieve visual concord.

I created this image specifically for ‘1 Shot 22’. Initially I set out to create linear patterns using a directional spotlight on an otherwise stark concrete surface. While some of this light play is incorporated in the final image, the real interest came from intricate shadows briefly projected onto the wall from a neighbouring construction site. That ‘one shot’ doesn’t always happen exactly the way we expect it to, sometimes we just need to react to what transpires.
